Big One Hundredth Birthday Party Planned for Montage County Courthouse

This coming fall the citizens of Montage County will be invited to the centennial celebration for their county courthouse.  This last of many former courthouses was erected in 1913. Under the leadership of the Montague County Historical Commission an old time birthday party will be held reflective of 1913. Organizations from throughout the county have been invited to join in the festivities.  The afternoon activities begin with a meal and tours of the majestic old courthouse and the new annex. The county's youth will be actively involved.  Elementary school children will show their prize winning artwork in the courthouse halls. Boy Scouts , honor society and 4-H members will assist in parking cars, directing traffic ,distributing programs and serving the birthday cake. Recreational activities of 1913 will be shown from riding a bicycle for two, leap frog, to rolling a hoop, mumbly peg, and handwork.  A barber shop quartet is planned to perform in the courthouse rotunda. Displays showing the local history of each community will be placed throughout the courthouse. Highlighting the day will be a program beginning with a roll call of communities who’s representative will respond by stepping forward with a Texas flag. Judge Tommie Sappington will address the audience. Hopefully the Texas Historical Commission Historic Marker recognizing the hundredth anniversary for the courthouse will ready for the unveiling. The celebration activities will be held on Saturday, October 12th from noon until three in Montague, Texas.
