Allen: Civil War comes to LIFE

Come experience life in the time of the Civil War

Civil War Living Historians of Collin County and the Allen Heritage Guild will be hosting an encampment at the Allen Heritage Village, 450 St Mary Drive, Allen, Friday through Sunday, October 25, 26, and 27.

The public is invited to view and learn about the life of a typical Civil War soldier, both
Union and Confederate. Living Historians will answer any question from the period.
Camp fires, drilling practices, bayonet exercises, a medical tent, and blacksmith
demonstrations are among the many fun-filled activities. The camp will be open to visitors
at 9 a.m. on Saturday. The camp will dismantle at 4 p.m. Sunday. At 11 a.m. and 5 p.m.
on Saturday and at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Sunday, the soldiers will demonstrate medical procedures.
Drills will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Skirmishes will be held at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.
Saturday and 2 PM on Sunday. The public will have the opportunity to shoot blank
loads from an authentic replica musket for $2 a shot. Parent must accompany each child
for muskets. A photo opportunity will be hosted by the Heritage Guild.
You can take your pictures as a union or confederate soldier.

A Pie Baking Contest will be held at St Mary Baptist Church on Saturday Oct 26 at 10a.m. Check the Allen Heritage Guild web site for the contest rules. www.allenheritage.org

At 2 p.m. on Saturday, Allen Community Theater will present a mock trial.
At 3 p.m. Saturday “Dress the Victorian Lady” will be presented at the Allen Christian Church in the Village. Notably North Texas Chorus will sing Civil War era music. Refreshments will be served.

At 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Ken Byler and “The Twin Fiddles,” Megan and Leah Bynum, will present the “Story of Diamond Bill” at the Allen Christian Church. At 7:30, Kym Banks will present a reading from Mark Twain, and letters from Civil War soldiers will be read. The evening will conclude with music by Keltic Dead.

Like Minded Friends will host a food and drink tent. Saturday noon to 3 p.m. the Heritage Guild will have a tent selling apple pie and pecan pie. They will also sell lemonade and popcorn. Other Allen organizations will have tents set up: Allen Community Theater, Notably North Texas, Cold Facts Paranormal, and Keltic Dead Musicians.

Civil War era souvenirs will be sold at the event. Some Civil War era games for children will be held on Saturday afternoon.
