Regional Art of Latin America:  A Sampler opens Tuesday, September 16, 2014 at the Museum of the Americas.  This exhibit focuses on the bellas artes, or fine art tradition.  The exhibit presents an opportunity to discover the variety of Latin American art by showing examples of water colors, oils, sculpture, works on paper, and more.  The eclectic display of works are from Mexico, Central, South America, and the Caribbean. The intent is to showcase works from a long established tradition of vibrant art that remains relatively unknown to an American audience.

Some of the art in this exhibition is done to appeal to a tourist market, but these works are by artists trained in the “European” manner.  This art tends to be representational—landscapes, urban landscapes, portraits, indigenous peoples or themes.  By contrast, urban art throughout Latin America tends to be non-representational or cutting-edge modern.  Also included are works by North American artists who have studied and/or worked in Mexico or Latin America, and works by Latin artists working in the United States.

This exhibit represents a departure for the Museum of the Americas which usually focuses on the indigenous peoples and the folk arts or traditional crafts of the Americas, but it is now time to take a step back and survey the greater depth of artistic expression in Latin America.

Regional Arts of Latin America is on display September 14 – November 1, 2014 at the Museum of the Americas, 216 Fort Worth Hwy., Weatherford, TX 76086.
