Original and Independent

Denton is the perfect place to forget boy bands and popped collars, traffic jams and monkey suits. This Texas Lakes Trail city is home to two major universities: the University of North Texas (UNT) and Texas Woman’s University (TWU). The 1897 Courthouse on the Square lawn is Denton’s living room, where we mingle and gather, whether it’s for a music festival or just to hang out. Just a short walk away is the Denton County Historical Park, which features the Bayless-Selby House, a look inside Denton life during the Victorian era. The park also houses the Quakertown House museum, telling the stories of the residents of Quakertown, a predominately African-American community from the early 1900s.

See another side of history with the Texas First Ladies’ gown collection and see the beautiful frocks donned by everyone from Margaret Moffette Lea Houston (wife of Sam Houston) to Cecilia Abbott. Learn the stories of the World War II WASPs (Women Airforce Service Pilots) and their fight to be recognized by the US Government for their service. These can be seen in the TWU Special Collections.

Both of our world-class universities also share their students’ artsy side as well, with the UNT on the Square gallery (open six days a week, free to the public) and TWU’s East-West Art Galleries (open Monday-Friday). The Greater Denton Arts Council works tirelessly to bring art from near and far to Denton, housed primarily at the Patterson-Appleton Arts Center. The downtown area boasts a state cultural district designated by the Texas Commission on the Arts.

Join us for a day or a week in Denton and enjoy the music, food and life that permeates from our original, independent lives. Located right at the intersection of I-35 E and I-35 W, we celebrate being a visitor’s destination of choice.
