Nativities focus on the meaning of Christmas, folk art nativities bring the message home.  Folk Art Nativities of the Americas on display at the Museum of the Americas through December 23, 2017 features new acquisitions on loan from Hilde and Helmut Horchler of Fort Worth, as well as over 75 Nativities from the Museum of the Americas collection.  In keeping with the focus of the museum, these Nativities from Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and the Native American Southwest, each reflect an artisan’s personal view of the world and story of the birth of Jesus.

A must see is the “Bunny” Nativity by well-known Santa Fe artist Joe Ortega.  This large, charming, 14 piece Nativity is carved from wood and each of the traditional figures is a rabbit with a distinct personality. Ortega’s imaginative and whimisical carvings of animals make his work distinctively his own.  He carves both animals and religious subjects as demonstrated by the “Driftwood” Nativity which is done in his unique style with carved Nativity figures set into an oval of cottonwood root.  Both are on loan from the Horchler’s collection.

The Museum of the Americas is located at 216 Fort Worth Hwy. in Historic Downtown Weatherford, Texas (across from the Farmer’s Market).  Open 10am—5pm, Tues—Sat.  Free. 817-341-8668;
